Description:Congenital syphilis causes fetal or perinatal death in 40% ofthe infants affected. The condition was well described in the 15thcentury and has long been recognized as a distinct syndrome in which the sourceis an infected adult. Several theories have been advanced to explain howthe infection is transmitted, including transmission from a fatherinfected with syphilis and transmission from an infant's nursing an infectedwet nurse. Transplacental transmission from an asymptomatic infectedmother was first described in 1906.
