Description:This report summarizes information received from collaborators in state health departments, hospitals, and other pertinent sources. It is intended primarily for their use, but may be of interest to others with responsibility for family planning evaluation and hospital abortion planning. Data shown in this report for the years 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1972 reflect the most current information available to the CDC, and updates data from previously published Abortion Surveillance Reports.
In 1972, 586,760 legal abortions were reported to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) from 27 states and the District of Columbia. The national abortion ratio (number of abortions per 1,000 live births) increased from 136.0 in 1971 to 180.1 in 1972. Of the abortions reported in 1972, 43.8% were performed in states outside the woman's state of residence, compared with 41.5% in 1971.
SUGGESTED CITATION: Center for Disease Control: Abortion Surveillance: 1972, issued April 1974.
