Description:This study describes patterns of cigarette smoking (current, former, never) by sociodemographic, household, and chronic disease characteristics and correlates among US adults receiving housing assistance from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during 2007-2012. Estimates were generated from 4,771 adults by using National Health Interview Survey and HUD-linked data. Overall, 48.4% of HUD-assisted adults were never smokers, 33.0% were current smokers, and 18.6% were former smokers; smoking status varied by sex, age, race/ethnicity, whether children were living in the household, and chronic disease status. These estimates could inform tobacco control interventions to improve the health and well-being of HUD-assisted residents.
