Description:Each year the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH), working in close collaboration with scientists, researchers, and others, compiles the annual Surgeon General’s Report The Health Consequences of Smoking for submission to the U.S. Congress as part of the Department’s responsibility to report new and current information on the topic as required under Public Law 91-222. This Report is the third to examine in detail specific disease entities related to smoking. The 1982 Report was a comprehensive assessment of the relationship between tobacco use and various cancers, and the 1983 Report examined this relationship for cardiovascular diseases. The 1984 volume represents a state-of-the-art comprehensive review of tobacco use and the development of chronic obstructive lung diseases.
The scientific content of this Report is the work of experts in the field of chronic obstructive lung disease research both within the Department of Health and Human. Services and from outside the Federal Government. Individual manuscripts were written by experts who are nationally and internationally recognized for their scientific understanding of the etiology of chronic obstructive lung diseases, particularly the relationship with cigareuttsee .
