Description:The mission of the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) Program is to respond to requests from employees, employers, and union representatives to evaluate potential health hazards in their workplace. These evaluations are done at no cost to the requestor. Once the evaluation is complete, recommendations are made on ways to reduce or eliminate identified hazards. Health Hazard Evaluations can help reduce hazards and create more healthful workplaces. One hundred and eighty-seven health hazards requests were addressed; 38 site visits were made; and 35,145 reports were downloaded. Outreach was achieved through various communications channels such as websites, databases, facebook, presentations, and publications. Some hazards reported on were: 1) Evaluation of Exposures and Respiratory Health at a Coffee Roasting and Packaging Plant; 2) Evaluation of Hazards during Harvesting and Processing Cannabis at an Outdoor Organic Farm; 3) Evaluation of Fire Fighters' Mental Health Symptoms and Exposure to Traumatic Events, Job Stress, and Bloodborne Pathogens; and 4) Evaluation of Chemical Exposures at a Vape Shop. Followback Program - After an evaluation, we followup with the workplace to see how we did and learn how things changed in the workplace. We do this through mailed surveys, phone calls, and return visits. There were positive changes reported at the workplaces we have visited based on the surveys comments we received. Other news of note: 1) Hurricane Response 2017 - Eight members of the HHE Program were deployed to help with CDC's response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. They assisted in a variety of response efforts in Atlanta, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. 2) Lights, Camera, Action! - Get an inside glimpse into how we conduct our evaluations by watching our 3 new videos! A camera crew captured the action during our visit to an electronics recycler facility. [Description provided by NIOSH]
