Description:A health hazard survey was conducted to determine if any employee hazard existed in a test station by a boiler exit at Hoerner Waldorf Corporation (SIC-2645), Missoula, Montana in June, 1973. Two workers were in the area 4 hours per day for 1 day a week to check the efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator. The work was sedentary, consisting of taking samples before air passed through the precipitator. Ventilation was provided. With Drager direct reading tubes, air was sampled for nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), carbon-monoxide (630080), and hydrogen- sulfide (7783064). Heat stress was evaluated using a wet globe bulb for measurement and inspecting the site. All samples were negative for the gases in question. Temperature readings ranged from 86.0 to 88.9 degrees-F. The hygienist did not note any chemical irritation. The author concludes that no significant health hazard exists in the test station location for the sedentary work done. Adequate cool water and salt tablets should be provided for employees in this area. In the event contamination from the outside environment is introduced through wind change, employees should leave this area until pollution is reduced. Employees with repeated symptoms should be replaced with others not as sensitive to heat.
