    $930,782 Funding for AR Activities Fiscal Year 2017

    Candida auris, a resistant fungus that can cause deadly infections, was identified in New Jersey. CDC provides resources to identify and contain resistant infections, like C. auris. After it emerged in the U.S. in 2016, the AR Lab Network regional labs began providing specialized testing to states fighting new threats.

    Funding to local health departments:

    $579,853 - RAPID DETECTION & RESPONSE to emerging drug-resistant germs is critical to contain the spread of these infections.With 2016 funding, New Jersey developed a universal transfer form, to be included in patients’ medical records when transferred between healthcare facilities. Use of this form improves communication between facilities to help ensure that prevention and control measures are continuously maintained, thus preventing the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms

    $98,000 -  HAI/AR PREVENTION works best when public health and healthcare facilities partner together to implement targeted, coordinated strategies to stop infections and improve antibiotic use. New Jersey received funding for this activity for the first time in 2017 to better prevent infections and protect patients.

    $54,263 - FOOD SAFETY projects protect communities by rapidly identifying drug-resistant foodborne bacteria to stop and solve outbreaks and improve prevention.

    In Fiscal Year 2018, New Jersey will ramp up testing to include whole genome sequencing of all Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli isolates and simultaneously monitor these isolates for resistance genes. States upload the sequence data into PulseNet for nationwide monitoring of outbreaks and trends. When outbreaks are detected, local CDC-supported epidemiologists investigate the cases to stop spread.     

    Funding to Universities and healthcare partners:

    $150,000 - RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY: Innovative Prevention & Tracking. Researchers will validate a new rapid diagnostic platform to detect the multidrug resistant fungal pathogen C. auris, and they will analyze C. auris transmission patterns in healthcare facilities by applying advanced genetic fingerprint methods.

    $48,666 - CENTER FOR DISEASE DYNAMICS, ECONOMICS & POLICY: Innovative Prevention & Tracking. Investigators are working with CDC to gather data on global challenges and opportunities to combat antibiotic resistance and improve antibiotic use, including assisting in global partner engagement.
