    Physical activity has many benefits, including reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases and supporting healthy aging.1 Walking is the most common form of physical activity across the country and an excellent way to help people become more active. In September 2015, the Office of the Surgeon General of the US Department of Health and Human Services released Step It Up! The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities to increase walking among people across the United States.

    The purpose of this report is to summarize the state of walking and walkability when the Call to Action was released, as well as selected activities done since to sustain the messages and promote the goals established by the Surgeon General.
