Description:This report is a chronological line listing of foodborne disease outbreaks compiled by the National Communicable Disease Center during 1966 from various sources: state and local health departments; two agencies of the U.S. Public Health Service, namely the Division of Environmental Engineering and Food Protection and the Epidemic Intelligence Service; and newspaper clippings. Only two states report routinely. There is considerable variation in the completeness of reports with respect to information on etiology, vehicle of transmission, and source of contamination. In over half the outbreaks the cause was not specified. There were no reports of viral foodborne illnesses.
The data are not representative and the quality of reports for the most part is marginal; therefore, in our judgment, no justifiable conclusions can be drawn about patterns of foodborne illnesses. The report emphasizes the need to improve the quality and quantity of primary data. It is written primarily because of the growing interest in foodborne disease problems. Anyone desiring to quote this report should contact the Enteric Diseases Unit for permission and interpretation.
