Slow Progress Underscores Need for Expanded Approach

Preliminary 2016 data show current declines in U.S. TB cases and rates are too slow to reach TB elimination in the foreseeable future, or even in this century.

    • The TB rate declined slightly (-3.4%) from 2015 to 2016 with approximately 2.9 cases per 100,000.

    • A slight decrease in TB cases (-2.7%) was reported in 2016, decreasing from 9,546 in 2015 to 9,287 in 2016.

    • The nation’s TB elimination goal is less than one case per 1 million people; however, there were 29 cases per 1 million people in 2016.

An expanded approach to address two TB-related conditions – TB disease and latent TB infection – is needed to overcome the nation’s elimination stalemate.
