Description:The mission of the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Program is to respond to requests from employees, employers, and union representatives to evaluate potential health hazards in their workplace. These evaluations are done at no cost to the requestor. Once the evaluation is complete, recommendations are made on ways to reduce or eliminate identified hazards. Health Hazard Evaluations can help reduce hazards and create more healthful workplaces. One hundred and ninety-four health hazards requests were addressed; 43 site visits were made; and outreach was achieved through various communications channels such as HHE websites, reports, databases, facebook, presentations, and publications. Some hazards reported on were: 1) Risk of Tuberculosis Exposure at an Elephant Refuge; 2) Exposure to New Solvents in Drycleaning Shops; 3) Respiratory Health at a Syntactic Foam Manufacturer; and 4) Heat-Related Illness and Rhabdomyolysis during Structural Firefighter Training. Our Followback Program - After an evaluation, we follow up with the managers, employees, and union representatives at the workplace to see how we did. We do this through mailed surveys, phone calls, and return visits. 2016 HHE projects include: 1) Modern nail salons; 2) Flame retardants in e-recycling; 3) Vape shops; 4) Coffee roasting; 5) Peroxyacetic acid disinfectant use in hospitals; and 6) Copper slag and coal slag processing.
