In September 2011, with a renewed commitment to action on heart disease and stroke prevention, the U .S . Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and a host of public and private partners launched Million Hearts®, an ambitious initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017 . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) co-lead the initiative, which is aligned with and will help catalyze progress in meeting the heart disease and stroke objectives of Healthy People 2020.
