    Former Nigerian Head of State General Dr. Yakubu Gowon has agreed to assist in the final stages of the Nigerian Guinea Worm Eradication Program (NIGEP). The agreement follows a visit by General Gowon to The Carter Center in Atlanta, USA in September this year, when he met with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and members of Global 2000 headquarters staff. Under an agreement between the Yakubu Gowon Center and The Carter Center, General Gowon will help intensify NIGEP's social mobilization and advocacy efforts leading toward the new target to end transmission of dracunculiasis in Nigeria by the end of December 2000.
