Description:The potential hazards associated with the interactions of tobacco smoke with chemicals and physical agents in the workplace are discussed. Six different mechanisms of action are described: toxic agents in tobacco also may occur in the workplace, increasing exposure to the agent; workplace chemicals may be transformed into more harmful agents by smoking; tobacco smoke may serve as carrier of workplace contaminants; smoking may produce an additive biological effect to that produced by a workplace contaminant; smoking may act synergistically with workplace toxic agents; or smoking may contribute to workplace accidents. Recommendations are made to curtail use of tobacco in workplaces where substances that may interact with tobacco are used. [Description provided by NIOSH]
