Description:Children’s emotional or behavioral difficulties can affect many aspects of their lives, including academic achievement, relationships with family and friends, and the risk of alcohol or substance abuse. Early intervention and treatment may help prevent these difficulties from worsening and reduce negative outcomes associated with mental health problems.
However, finding appropriate, affordable, and family-oriented treatment for children with emotional or behavioral difficulties remains a challenge, as noted in the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health Report.
To monitor children’s use of mental health services and treatment, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) collaborated to develop new questions for the 2005 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Sample Child
