Content Notes:Series Note: The series of publications Stacks organizes as the "HIV Surveillance Report" has gone through changes in name and publishing frequency since January 1989.
Name Changes: The series started out with "HIV/AIDS Surveillance" on its cover masthead in 1989. However, in the publication note on the inside cover, the series is called "HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report." The masthead was updated to "HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report" with the May 1993 release, which also introduced the Volume and Issue numbering scheme. Then in 2008, the masthead and series name changes to "HIV Surveillance Report". [Note: Stacks staff catalogs the Title of issues based on the cover Title. Stacks uses the most recent Series name, "HIV Surveillance Report", to organize all previous and current releases.]
Publishing Frequency: During the late-1980s, CDC published weekly statistics on HIV cases, entitled "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) weekly surveillance report - United States". In January 1989 the first "HIV/AIDS Surveillance" monthly report was released, replacing the weekly report. After the April 1992 issue, publication frequency changed to quarterly, with the next issue coming out in July 1992. In June 1994, the publishing frequency changes to two times a year (or semi-annually). In 2003, the publishing frequency shifts to an annual report only.
Volume Numbering: Volume and Issue numbering does not appear on the HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report until May 1993. This 1993 First Quarter Edition is labeled "Vol. 5, No. 1". Releases from 1989 through January 1993 are not assigned specific Volume and Issue numbers. [Note: Stacks records may use the Year of Publication (for example: 1989) as Volume Number and the Month of case reporting (for example: cases reported in February are 02,) for the Issue number for ease of sorting.]
Subseries: In 1999, the subseries "HIV/AIDS Surveillance Supplemental Report" began. The first "HIV/AIDS Special Surveillance Report" was released in 2003. The only report issued in the "HIV/AIDS Surveillance Technical Report" subseries was released in 2002.
