Alternative Title:2023 BRFSS Survey Data and Documentation: Weighting the BRFSS Data

Description:This document provides a general description of the 2023 BRFSS weighting process. Where a factor does
not apply, processors set its value to 1 for calculation. Design weighting reduces the bias due to unequal
probability of selection. The BRFSS also uses iterative proportional fitting, or “raking” to adjust for
demographic differences between those persons who are sampled and the population they represent.
The weighting methodology, therefore, is comprised of two sections: design weight and raking.
