Description:Respiratory diseases associated with exposure to organic solvents were considered. Specific topics that were addressed included: definition of solvents; categories of solvents (aliphatic hydrocarbons, cyclic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, esters, and ethers); physical properties of solvents; sources of exposure; mechanisms of injury and effect (animal studies); clinical manifestations (nonrespiratory health effects, human chamber studies, and case reports of occupational respiratory disease caused by solvent exposure); and epidemiology (population based studies, occupational morbidity studies, occupational mortality studies, and studies of indoor environments). Data on respiratory effects secondary to solvent exposure tended to be limited and somewhat inconsistent. While painters, embalmers, and certain chemical industry workers appeared to be at increased risk of mucous membrane irritation, potential exposures to other respiratory toxicants prevented definitive conclusions about organic solvents. The authors conclude that further research is needed to better characterize the specific chemical and individual factors associated with increased risk of adverse health effects, mechanisms of effect, and possible interactions of organic solvents with other respiratory toxicants.
