Description:background and objective: Traditional process measures may not capture important contextual and organizational factors that influence workplace interventions. This is particularly true for participatory interventions, where success is largely determined by how well the participatory process is implemented. However, guidance for evaluating participatory program implementation is sparse. We modified the Healthy Workforce Participatory Program Process Evaluation Rating Sheet (PERS) to evaluate implementation of a workplace participatory program for improving obesogenic behaviors, and compared modified PERS ratings to other process measures and worker-reported organizational factors. methods: We implemented a two-year participatory program in 11 work groups as part of a cluster-randomized trial among predominantly low-income healthcare workers. The program required each group to form a team of 4-8 workers to develop and implement ideas to improve co-workers' health behaviors within their respective workgroups; the research team facilitated and documented this process. We scored the 11 groups using the modified PERS and other implementation process measures. PERS scores were compared with participant responses of Organizational Health Climate, Job Satisfaction, and Supervisory Support at baseline and 12 months. results: PERS ratings aligned well with other measures of program implementation. Preliminary analysis shows that baseline organizational health climate, supervisory support, and job satisfaction did not predict future team function scores (N=404). However, workers' 12 month responses showed statistically significant improvements in reported organizational health climate, supervisor support, and job satisfaction in workgroups with better-functioning participatory teams. 24 month follow-up data are now being collected and will be presented. conclusions: Evaluation of workplace participatory interventions remains challenging. The PERS results were consistent with other commonly used measures of process evaluation and highlighted implementation factors that may influence program success. PERS scores were associated with changes in organizational factors, suggesting that the tool may useful in assessing team performance as an implementation outcome for participatory interventions.
