Description:Background: The World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) is a government-funded program that monitors and treats workers with certified illnesses related to their response to the World Trade Center terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. The Multiple Myeloma (MM) Treatment Template for WTCHP 9/11 general responders receiving cancer care in an outpatient setting was developed to improve the efficiency of obtaining reimbursement approvals from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and to improve the coordination of care. Purpose: Create a MM Treatment Template, which is a document with MM clinical management information outlined and areas to record the patient's treatment plan. This document will be used to direct the bundling of medical services for reimbursement authorizations in the outpatient setting at one organization. Methods: An exhaustive review of the best available evidence, including MM clinical practice guidelines and other high-level resources, was conducted to create the MM Treatment Template. The innovation of the MM Treatment Template required collaboration with MM experts, WTCHP management, and staff involved in obtaining reimbursement approvals to ensure all clinical and reimbursement approval requirements were incorporated in the MM Treatment Template. The development of the MM Treatment Template was completed as part of a Doctor of Nursing Practice project by a Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse Practitioner. Results: A MM Treatment Template was constructed and implemented on a small scale, five patients, in early 2018. Conclusions/Implications: A comprehensive evidence search and partnership with MM clinicians as well as individuals involved in the reimbursement approval process were required for the creation of the MM Treatment Template. Collaboration and multi-layered approaches customized to a setting are essential for any knowledge translation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
