• Description:
  The proceedings of a conference on occupational stress were presented. Stress was determined to involve the reactions of the body to external or internal events; these reactions can be manifested as physical or mental symptoms. The rapid pace and highly technological nature of society have increased the amount of environmental stress under which individuals must operate, and many people have difficulty in coping. Some of the causes and problems of stress were discussed by experts in the field of occupational stress, including researchers, physicians, psychology practitioners, and employee health managers. They presented their research findings and experiences with a number of stress reduction techniques. Included were studies on high stress occupations, the health consequences of shift work, the personality profile of individuals predisposed toward heart disease, the use of biofeedback in the reduction of stress, and a number of discussions concerning specific stress management programs at various organizations. The presentations were reviewed, and target areas for future research and intervention were identified. [Description provided by NIOSH]
