Description:An indepth survey of the American Cyanamid Company (SIC-2869, SIC- 2899), Westwego, Louisiana was conducted in May, 1984. The facility produced acrylamide (79061) monomers and polyacrylamide (9003058). Acrylamide was produced by catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile (107131) within a closed reactor system to yield a 50 percent solution, which was then polymerized. A total of 550 workers were employed throughout the facility. Twenty two of these were involved in acrylamide production and 35 in polyacrylamide production. At least 48 cases of acrylamide poisoning were reported since the facility began production in 1974. All of these involved dermal or inhalation exposure. Industrial hygiene sampling showed personal acrylamide exposures of 0.015 to 0.132 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3), mean 0.053mg/m3. The OSHA standard for acrylamide is defective valves, during quality control sampling, while loading trucks and rail cars, and from contact with polymers that contained a monomer residue. Much of the acrylamide production area was open to natural ventilation. The author concludes that the mean acrylamide exposure at the facility is approximately 17 percent of the OSHA standard. Recommendations include rinsing the production equipment and conducting short term monitoring, especially when loading trucks. [Description provided by NIOSH]
