  This chapter emphasizes some of the challenges and approaches being used to promote safer and healthier conditions among small businesses. The chapter focuses on the application of an integrated approach, referred to by the United States Centers for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as Total Worker Health® (TWH). We approach the topic by first providing an overview of TWH and our mechanistic model by which TWH policies, programs and practices impact worker health, safety and well-being outcomes. Second, within this framework, we discuss why small businesses require special consideration and provide an overview of how TWH concepts can be applied to this setting. Through case studies, we illustrate the application of TWH principles in practice. The chapter concludes with a discussion of research needs, based on identified gaps in published research literature and stemming from the questions raised in our case studies.
