Description:The year 2019 marks the 28th anniversary of the renaissance of the carbon nanotube by Sumio Iijima, who was instrumental in elucidating the structure and potential of a material that had been known and eschewed for the best part of a century. From the beginning, nanotubes and nanotechnology have promised to bring revolutionary advances to most areas of society and to transform our daily lives in many ways. It is significant that after a quarter century of investment, nanotechnology is beginning to deliver on its promise. This book is designed as a bridge from science to manufacturing to commercialization of nanotube fiber and film materials, and also upcoming graphene materials, and thus will help to realize the large commercial potential of carbon nanostructured materials. The book uniquely tries to cover the full scope of activity needed to bring nanomaterials products to market. Nanotube Superfiber Materials is designed to help scientists, engineers, students, managers, and entrepreneurs understand the science behind the unique properties of nanotube fiber materials and graphene, how to produce the materials at reasonable cost, and how to transition the materials into commercial products. The chapters give an account of the basic science, manufacturing, properties, and commercial potential of specific nanotube materials. New discoveries and new technology are reported, along with experiences in handing-off the improved materials to industry. Nanotube superfiber materials applications will cut across most of the fields of engineering including spacecraft, automobiles, drones, hyperloop tracks, sensors, textiles, wearable electronics, energy generation and storage, water and air filtration, infrastructure, composites, and medicine. There is not a current similar comprehensive book (or journal publications) describing this science to commercialization connection focused on nanotechnology. Chapter authors are experts from around the world who wrote their chapters to be readable for the intended diverse audience. The book fills in and integrates technical details to provide an all-inclusive view that allows nanotube materials and graphene to be pragmatically evaluated for real applications, which is what technical papers often do not provide. The book will help scientist entrepreneurs to innovate and translate their work to the marketplace, thus helping people in their everyday lives. The second edition has all new chapters from authors that are highly active international researchers in the field. The overall motivation for editing the book is that properties of macroscale assemblages of nanotubes (yarn and sheet) are reaching a threshold where they are becoming commercially very useful and valuable to industries in most manufacturing sectors. Readers will find this book to be a useful comprehensive guide to help their laboratory and industry translate nanotube science into commercial applications. The book is also an up-to-date survey of the field of nanotube fiber materials and graphene where experts from around the world give their views on science, manufacturing, and commercialization in one reliable source.
