Description:Worker exposures to free silica (7631869) and noise were determined at Backman Foundry and Machine in Provo, Utah on November 8, and December 18, 1968. The survey was part of a NIOSH conducted state wide foundry health study requested by the Utah State Industrial Commission. Respirable mass samples ranged from 0.6 to 5.4 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/cu m), with 18.1 and 17.6 percent free silica at the shot blast and shakeout operations, respectively. The Threshold Limit values for these samples were 0.5mg/cu m. Noise measurements ranged from 92 to 108 decibels relative to the A weighted scale. The author recommends the provision of additional exhaust ventilation in the foundry, local exhaust ventilation for grinding and chipping equipment, the use of respirators and ear protectors for appropriate personnel, and a more extensive survey at a later date.
