Description:A survey was conducted at five granite fabrication facilities (SIC- 3281) in Barre, Vermont, November 5-14, 1973, to evaluate the exposure of workers to respirable free silica (7631869) in the Vermont granite industry. The granite fabrication process is described, and dust problems and controls in the fabrication process are discussed. Of the five facilities monitored, only one plant showed all exposures to be below the OSHA standard for respirable dust. The samples collected in the other four plants indicated that from 25 to 47 percent of the population sampled were exposed above the OSHA standard for respirable dust. The average free silica content of the respirable dust samples analyzed was found to be 10- 13 percent. Recommendations are made for reducing exposure to respirable dust in the Vermont granite industry. [Description provided by NIOSH]
