Description:The separation of clean coal fines from dirty coal fines is a challenging problem. In order to develop a new approach to this problem, a circulating fluidized bed, CFB, was modified to create conditions which have shown to segregate larger particles. The modified riser system consisted of essentially concentric jets with the center jet transporting the coal fines into the riser. The larger, less dense, coal fines migrated to the wall of the riser and were captured. The smaller, more dense, fines continued up through the riser and were collected in the product bin. The coal used in this research had previously been cleaned and was crushed to a size less than 210 μm. The clean coal fines showed a reduction of up to 20% in the percent sulfur. The yield was between 40% and 70%. [Description provided by NIOSH]
