Description:Our major objective for this book is to provide indepth information on occupational and environmental illnesses, injuries, and prevention assiciated with production agriculture to a broad range of health and safety professionals. Furthermore we aim to motivate the reader to apply this information to serve the health and safety needs of the agricultural population. The industry of agriculture provides essential needs for the world's population. Essential needs of a society were put into perspective in 1943 by the famous sociologist Abraham Maslow in his well-accepted theory of hierarchy of needs entitled "A Theory of Human Motivation" (Pshchological Review 50:370-396). He used a pyramid metaphor to describe how basic human needs must first be met in order to advance to a higher order of human function. at the base of his pyramid are physiological needs, such as food, clothing and shelter; these are products of the comodities of the industry of agricultyre. The secure and productive agriculture of industrialized countries has allowed these societies to develop and progress in many areas of human endeavor. On the other hand, developing countries must first achieve a priductive, secure, and sustainable agriculture in order to facilitate their development. [Description provided by NIOSH]
