Description:A semiquantitative reasoning methodology for filtering and ranking the results of hazard and operability (HAZOP) analyses in an expert system for automated HAZOP (HAZOPExpert) analyses was discussed. The HAZOPExpert system was a qualitative analysis system that was developed to make HAZOP analyses less labor intensive and less expensive. HAZOPExpert has been shown to identify the same hazards, denoted as causes and consequences, found by a HAZOP analysis. HAZOPExpert, however, typically identifies a much larger number of causes and consequences than HAZOP due to the strict qualitative logic and decision approach that has been incorporated into the system. To reduce the number of causes and consequences found by a typical HAZOPExpert analysis, a semiquantitative filter and ranking approach has been developed. This involves incorporating information on the design and operating specifications of the process units and process materials into the analysis. The filtering and ranking approach was illustrated by applying it to an ethylene (74851) production facility for which a HAZOP and HAZOPExpert analysis had been performed. When applied to five process deviations such as temperature, pressure, and feed or waste flow anomalies, the HAZOPExpert system identified 21 causes and 50 consequences. The standard HAZOP analysis had identified 11 causes and 11 consequences. Filtering and ranking reduced the number of causes found by the HAZOPExpert analysis to 21 and the number of consequences to 24. The filtered and ranked causes and consequences still included those indicated by the conventional HAZOP analysis. [Description provided by NIOSH]
