Assigned versus participative goal setting and response generalization: managing injury control among professional pizza deliverers.

Description:A study was undertaken to measure means of improving the driving practices of professional pizza deliverers. Driving practices are of concern since it has been reported that pizza deliverers have an accident rate three times higher than the national average. Baseline data was obtained on safety belt use, turn signal use, and intersection stopping by 324 pizza deliverers at three pizza delivery locations. All locations were comparable in parking lot access to city streets. Employees were primarily college students, and all worked on commission. Intervention was then undertaken in two of the groups, with two different types of goal setting (participatory and assigned) evaluated for effectiveness. In the assigned group, employees were lectured on driving information and were assigned a goal to increase complete stops at intersection. The participatory group discussed the information and participated in the goal setting. The goal in both groups was the same (75% complete stops). No intervention was undertaken in the third (control) group. The groups were evaluated for driving practices as before during an intervention phase (4 weeks), a withdrawal phase (4 weeks), and a follow up phase (5.5 months). Percentage of complete stops rose to over 65% during the intervention phase in both groups, stayed at about 60% during the withdrawal phase, and dropped to baseline levels during follow up. The participatory group showed increases in turn signal and safety belt use during the intervention and withdrawal phases as well, but the assigned group did not. The authors conclude that participative goal setting is worthy of study as an applied intervention strategy. [Description provided by NIOSH]
