Description:This student manual covered the physics of sound, the ear and the effect of sound, vibration, and noise control. This modularized course was intended for advanced training of students in the field of industrial hygiene with an emphasis on controlling exposures found in the workplace. Under the physics of sound, information was provided regarding the concepts of sound, sound power, sound pressure, sound intensity, relationships between these various factors, various levels of intensity, and the relationship between sound pressure and sound power level in a room taking into account the concepts of transmission loss and noise reduction. The section dealing with the ear included the threshold of hearing and hearing loss, possible causes of hearing loss, and other characteristics of sound such as loudness, perceived noise level, annoyance of noise, and speech interference. The monitoring and measurement of vibration was discussed, along with various methods of controlling such exposures. Various approaches to noise control were considered, including initial design considerations in a facility, predicting noise exposures, substituting less noisy equipment, use of enclosures, shields and barriers, and noise control efforts at the receiving end.
