Description:The development, construction, and performance characteristics of a miniature peristaltic vacuum pump for use in portable instruments was described. The pump was small, low mass, low power consuming, and was developed for use in transportable gas chromatography/mass spectrometry equipment. The pump was based on a peristaltic tubing pump modified to overcome rapid tubing deterioration problems normally encountered when peristaltic pumps are used for vacuum pumping. Using forced air tubing cooling methods, the pump tubing lifetime was extended to allow for typical pump service intervals of over 100 hours. Servicing normally consisted of changing the pump tubing, requiring only a few minutes of time and a small material cost. Oil sealed rotary pump alternatives were examined but required significantly more pump mass, volume and power consumption. The author concludes that the pump will be useful for portable scientific and engineering instruments requiring compatible pressure and flow characteristics. These include the backing of high vacuum pumps, rough pumping vacuum systems used with certain ion and cryosorption vacuum pumps, and interstage pumping of membrane separators.
