Description:Quality control in spirometry was discussed. After choosing the equipment and training the technician, a quality assurance program was considered the next most important step to maximize the clinical usefulness of spirometry. A recommended quality assurance program published by the American Thoracic Society was described. Its major component was a procedure manual containing a description of test procedures, guidelines for ordering and reporting spirometry, a quality control plan, and other pertinent information provided by the spirometer manufacturer. Instrument calibration checks and basic consistency testing were considered important safeguards against the introduction of errors associated with software or hardware changes. The author concludes that use of these established guidelines in a spirometry program will help to ensure maximum quality control and clinical usefulness of the procedure.
