Description:The papers given at a symposium on assessing reproductive hazards in the workplace were presented. The symposium was sponsored by NIOSH and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences. Papers presented included: a summary of the effects of dibromochloropropane (96128) in laboratory animals and humans; monitoring ovulation as a means of assessing reproductive hazards in the workplace; assessing menstrual variability in working populations; the use of sperm evaluations in human genetic monitoring; an overview of a longitudinal study of semen quality in unexposed workers; a study of the effects of ethylene-dibromide (106934) on semen quality; measuring human chorionic gonadotropin as a means of detecting early pregnancy loss; using time/to/pregnancy data as a means of studying occupational exposures to reproductive toxins; the results of studies of semen quality in workers producing reinforced plastic and stainless steel welders; using endocrine evaluations in assessing male reproductive hazards; fertility monitoring as a means of detecting male reproductive toxicity; conclusions that can be drawn from a study of semen quality in males working in a pesticide manufacturing facility; using a sperm penetration assay for assessing the effects of toxic agents on male fertility; a discussion of factors influencing female fertility; a review of NIOSH epidemiological studies on pregnancy outcomes in occupationally exposed populations; a discussion of the impact of reproductive heterogeneity on a computer model of human fertility; a discussion of the National Toxicology Program's chemical nomination, selection, and testing process; a description of a protocol used to assess the reproductive effects of toxicants in rats; a description of NIOSH's process for selecting chemicals and selecting priorities for reproduction research; and a discussion of Food and Drug Administration guidelines for reproduction toxicity testing.
