Description:The characteristics important for air sampling pump selection, operation, and maintenance were reviewed and discussed. The choice of a personal air sampling pump may be determined by the air sampling flow rate. Commercially available pumps operated at high flow rates, low flow rates, or multi flow rates. The flow rate selection should be based on sample collection efficiency. For flow rate accuracy and stability, the the functioning of the flow metering devices (the rotometer and the critical orifice) must be understood. Specifics were discussed concerning sampling with a rotometer, the calibration procedure, sampling with a limiting or critical flow orifice, and calibration with mass flow sensors. Several miscellaneous points were discussed, including rechargeable battery packs as power sources, voltage regulators to maintaining constant voltage during sampling, and the importance of a positive displacement stroke counter. Regardless of what equipment is chosen it is important that the operator be fully versed in the principles of operation and maintenance required of the equipment. [Description provided by NIOSH]
