An approach for gaining access to shiftworkers through labor unions was discussed. The procedure was used to recruit volunteers in the Saint Louis, Missouri area for a work sleep survey in shiftworkers. The procedure involved approaching the unions with a demonstrated positive attitude toward the function of organized labor in American society, seeking the trust and advice of union leaders by working through the official leadership of each union, explaining all dimensions of the research program, emphasizing the voluntary nature of each member's participation and obtaining informed consent for each stage only after providing each participant with a complete description of the stage, maintaining complete confidentiality of all participants, and maintaining personal contact with union leaders and members throughout the course of the study. A total of 1,442 union members completed a preliminary questionnaire that provided information on type of work, hours of work, hours of sleep, drug use and related matters. The participants were also able to indicate whether they were interested in participating in the laboratory and interview stages of the project. Seventy six percent of these participants were obtained at union meetings, 15 percent as a result of distribution by stewards and officers, 5 percent through direct mailing by the union, and the rest by miscellaneous methods. Of the 1,442 workers who completed the questionnaire, 997 agreed to participate in the laboratory and interview phases of the project. The authors conclude that many unions will cooperate in research projects. The climate and handling of contacts between union and researcher must enlist the trust and confidence of union officers and members. [Description provided by NIOSH]
