Review of mesothelioma incidence and mortality in Texas.

  Mortality data and cancer incidence data for malignant mesothelioma were reviewed for the state of Texas using data from four Public Health Regions in the state where fairly complete information has been reported. In these four regions there was a total of 88 cases of mesothelioma diagnosed among residents from 1976 through 1980. Death certificates were obtained for 82. In 72 of the cases the pleura was the primary site, and in 14 cases the mesothelioma occurred in the peritoneum. The data in this review were insufficient to relate the incident cases to specific occupational asbestos (1332214) exposure or environmental exposures. Using data from the cancer registry for the entire state, the geographic mortality pattern indicated excesses along the Gulf Coast and in east Texas and in the western and northwestern parts of the state. In reviewing the locations of specific industries in the state it was determined that asbestos products were made in these regions or that asbestos was used in the industries located in these areas, for example, in the shipbuilding industry along the coast. In this study 20 percent of the death certificates were found to carry misclassifications of disease. [Description provided by NIOSH]
