Description:Development of an 8 hour whole air sampler is reviewed, along with small passive monitors, versatile solid collection tubes, active personal dosimeters, advanced personal sampling pumps, and a pocket sized gas chromatographic analyzer to measure personal industrial exposures. The midget impinger or bubbler, charcoal, gel and sorbent tube methods, and new low flow pumps of greater ranges that allow use of new sorbents also are discussed. Personal passive or active dosimeters that are based on the principle of diffusion are described. Passive models for sampling nitrogen dioxide (10102440), sulfur dioxide (74446095), mercury (7439976), and organic vapors are examined. The pocket sized gas chromatograph is being developed using microetching technology. The author concludes that in 3 to 5 years, this small device possibly will selectively monitor 10 different contaminants, provide real time warning of acute exposures, and accumulate a worker's time weighted average exposure to each of the components.
