Description:Morphological models of human nervous system disease, developed through animal research, are described. Nervous system conditions are classified according to putative site of attack (neuron cell body, Schwann cell myelin, central peripheral distal axon, predominantly central axon, and proximal axon), and the associated human diseases are listed. Symptoms and chemical causes of neuronopathy, toxic myelinopathy, predominantly central axonopathy, and proximal axonopathy are reviewed. Central peripheral distal axonopathy, the most common peripheral nervous system reaction to exogenous toxins, is discussed and two animal model studies of this condition and human and animal correlations are considered. Industrial, environmental, and pharmaceutical agents associated with toxic axonopathies also are listed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
