Description:The molecular structure, Chemical Abstracts Service number, Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances number, production figures, uses, and producer and user data are provided for organoisocyanates, toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (584849) (TDI), toluene-2,5-diisocyanate (91087), toluene-2,4-diisocyanate and 2,6-diisocyanate mixture, methyl-isocyanate (624839), phenyl-isocyanate (103719), m- chlorophenyl-isocyanate (2909388), and p-chlorophenyl-isocyanate (104121). The isocyanates in vapor form have a strongly irritating effect on all mucous membranes. After 8 days to two months of exposure to TDI, workers complain of eye, throat, and bronchial irritation, followed by asthmatic attacks. Case reports indicate that bronchospasm is the chief effect of TDI. A threshold limit value of 0.02ppm is recommended for TDI and methyl-isocyanate.
