Description:The molecular structure, Chemical Abstracts Service number, Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances number, production figures and economic trends, uses and producer and user data are presented for organic anhydrides, acetic-anhydride (108247), maleic-anhydride (108316), phthalic-anhydride (85449), succinic-anhydride (108305), tetrahydrophthalic-anhydride (85438), trimellitic-anhydride (552307), glutaric-anhydride (108554) and propionic-anhydride (123626). Acute, chronic and subchronic effects of exposure to the various anhydrides are presented. Acetic, maleic, and phthalic anhydrides exert their highly irritating effects on the eyes, skin, and upper respiratory tract with possible injury to the lungs. Succinic-anhydride is reported to be carcinogenic. Skin exposure to acetic-anhydride causes a delayed bulbous dermatitis with desquamation, while exposure to the liquid causes skin burns and serious corneal injury. OSHA recommends threshold limits of 5, anhydrides. The Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia recommended in 1969, threshold limits of 0.2ppm and 1ppm respectively for phthalic- anhydride. A list of reported human occupational exposures to six anhydrides prepared by NIOSH indicates that the largest number of exposures is to phthalic-anhydride, followed by maleic-anhydride.
