Description:Biomechanical characteristics of vertebral motion segments are studied for obtaining a basic understanding of how the human spine functions. Two types of models are used: a simplified rigid body, deformable element model that reflects the gross behavior of the whole motion segments and a two-dimensional asymmetric, finite- element model that provides data concerning the detailed behavior of an intervertebral disc and the two attached bodies in longitudinal tension and compression. Vertebral motion segments are found capable of reasonably large amounts of motion. Data are presented for the behavior of motion segments in response to axial loads, and the effect of nuclear pressurization. [Description provided by NIOSH]
