Description:Each year in the United States about 8 million cars are retired from operation, and in many localities the accumulation of discarded hulks is a major eyesore and land pollutant. Yet, of all the manufactured items used in daily life the automobile probably represents the greatest potential source of recyclable materials. The automotive industry in 1969 consumed the following percentages of important materials used in the United States: rubber 65, zinc 33, steel 20, nickel 11, aluminum 10, and copper 8. Clearing the environment of the vast accumulations of junked autos with simultaneous recovery of the automotive components for reuse has been the objective of the Bureau of Mines auto scrap research programs. This paper summarizes the pertinent techniques developed by the Bureau, working in conjunction with industry for processing scrap autos. [Description provided by NIOSH]
