The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Research Center is presently investigating techniques to improve the dewatering of fine-particle slurries and recover water lost in the waste slurries. As part of the investigation, this study was conducted to evaluate the dewatering of drilling muds using salts and various flocculating agents. A high-molecular-weight polyacrylamide was found to be the most effective polymer for the water-base drilling muds, while the oil-base mud was dewatered with nonionic polyethylene oxide (peo) and a high-molecular-weight nonionic polyacrylamide. Even at low polymer dosages the oil-base drilling mud was dewatered to 72 pct solids and the water-base mud was dewatered from 0.3 to 62 pct solids. These dewatered muds were in the form of a consolidated, coherent mass that could be easily handled. [Description provided by NIOSH]
