Description:Alloy specimens in the vanadium-rich region of the vanadium-nitrogen system were prepared by the reaction of high-purity vanadium foil and nitrogen. Specimens were annealed, quenched, and examined by x- ray and metallographic techniques to determine the degree of nitrogen solubility in a vanadium. Solubility was determined as a function of temperature at equilibrium pressure. Equilibrium pressures were not measured. Nitrogen solubility is found to be 1.15 wt pct at 600 deg C, 1.65 wt pct at 800 deg C, 2.20 wt pct at 1000 deg C, and 2.95 wt pct at 1200 deg C. A sluggish transformation is observed between 500 deg and 600 deg C for alloys having nitrogen, contents above 1 wt pct. It is likely that a peritectoid compound having a composition near v13n is formed. The composition range of the hexagonal beta phase could not be established accurately because of the small difference in lattice dimensions between the vanadium-saturated and nitrogen-saturated compound. The range is narrow, probably lying between VN0.32 and VN0.36 and does not appear to vary within the temperature range 300 deg to 1000 deg C. [Description provided by NIOSH]
