Description:With the ultimate objective of developing a method for predicting mixing spread of buoyant and momentum-controlled hydrogen plumes and of air pollutants exhausted into the open atmosphere, our approach is to develop a method of calculation based on theoretical and empirical analyses and not compare the theoretical predictions with experimental results obtained by ourselves and others. Our experiments cover free jets of helium, argon, and methane discharging at relatively low velocities into "ambient" air. A semiempirical correction is made for the effect of buoyancy based on Froude numbers and entrainment data of Ricou and Spalding. The computed results also are compared with the Morton analyses, in which approximations and simplifications are applied to jet entrainment with small density gradients.
