Description:Operation of first longwall panel to be mined under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources at the Dutch Creek No. 1 Mine is underway. The 800-ft- wide longwall face, which is part of a multilift longwall demonstration, is extracting a 10-ft-high top lift from a 28-ft- thick coal horizon in an area of the property where the coal basin a and coal basin b beds have come together to form one seam. This face, the longest ever operated in the United States, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. From the first month of operation the performance of the longwall face has yielded high productivity and safety, which should be of interest to coal producers in the United States.
