  Information was provided on methods for preventing transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis-B virus to fire service workers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and law enforcement and correctional facility personnel. The report included a review of modes of virus transmission in the workplace, general methods of infection control and universal precautions regarding blood and body fluids. Employer responsibilities were listed and included topics such as vaccination, management of percutaneous exposure and human bites, and documentation of exposure and reporting as well as disposal of instruments, cleaning techniques, and waste disposal. The use of personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, gowns) was reviewed. The final section concentrated on factors relevant to law enforcement and correctional facility officers and considered such circumstances as fights, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, evidence handling, body removal, decontamination, and disposal.
