Hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses and the most common service-related disability among veterans. The best way to prevent hearing loss in work settings is first and foremost to prevent high noise levels. But in some occupations, that is very difficult to achieve; so the next best step is to reduce the noise that reaches the ears of a worker through the use of hearing protection such as earmuffs and earplugs and to monitor changes in hearing as part of a "hearing conservation program." The technology we developed during this project addressed several issues that will help workers ensure their hearing protection works well, while also allowing employers to improve the efficiency of their hearing conservation program and reduce disruptions to the worker's day.
