  • Description:
The Department of Work Environment (DWE) has provided comprehensive occupational health and safety training since 1987. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), through its training grant program, has been an important partner in this effort. Since 1990, DWE has received support for its industrial hygiene and safety/ergonomics programs; support for the epidemiology program was added in 1998. Starting in July 2000, just after the period covered by this progress report, occupational health policy was added, bringing to four the number of separate programs supported by NIOSH. Both the MS and ScD degrees are offered in all four program areas. Most MS students matriculate into the industrial hygiene and safety/ergonomics programs; over the course of two years of full-time equivalent study, these students receive a comprehensive education preparing them for careers in the private sector, unions, or government agencies. Doctoral students are fully trained for careers in research and teaching. The Department faculty was stable throughout the training grant. All twelve members of our faculty have reputations as excellent teachers and researchers, and many are recognized as leaders in the field of occupational health education. As has been true since the beginning of our training grant, the distinctive contributions of our programs continue to be quality, affordability, and accessibility. The program faculty are of the highest quality, as described above, and the graduate education received at UMass Lowell is second to none. Tuition continues to be modest (currently less than $5000/year for residents); this, combined with the excellence of the academic programs, ensures that the students (and NIOSH) receive excellent value for their money. The Department devotes considerable effort to ensure that its programs are available to part-time students; all core IH and safety/ergonomics courses are offered in the late afternoon or evening at least half of the time, so that part-time students can complete the degree while working.
